The Nez Perce National Historic Trail Map produced by the US Forest Service depicts the 1877 route of a small band of Nez Perce Indians, who engaged in several running battles with the pursuing U.S. Army while trying to seek refuge in Canada.

In the summer of 1877 a small group of Nez Perce Indians began a journey along this route from eastern Oregon, through Idaho Territory, and into Montana Territory, stopping finally at the Bear's Paw Mountains just south of Canada. Five Nez Perce bands were involved - about 800 people herding more than 2,000 horses - and carrying whatever possessions they could manage. Yet they made this trek in less thatn 4 months - for they were fleeing from the U.S. Army, which was under orders to place them on a reservation in western Idaho Territory.

Although these Indians hoped to peaceably escape from the Army, they were forced to combat their pursuers nearly a dozen times.

This map traces their route and gives brief descriptions of each of their encounters with the army.

Montana's era of "Indian Wars" consisted of nearly a century of skirmishes, battles, and large-scale wars between the U.S. military and native nations, including Blackfeet, Sioux, Northern Cheyennes, Arapahos, Gros Ventres, and Nez Perces--and the army's Crow and Shoshone allies. These battlegrounds remain today, a testament to the clash of cultures that defined the region in the nineteenth century.

Author Barbara Fifer takes readers on a historic journey to the solemn sites of Montana's most facinating and storied battles, from Two Medicine Creek to the Little Bighorn and on to the Sweetgrass Hills, revealing engaging tales--from fighters and witnesses on both sides.
