The Jedediah Smith and Winegar Hole Wilderness Map produced by the US Forest Service contains the most up-to-date information on access roads, trails, campsites, terrain, and points of interest within the Jedediah Smith and Winegar Hole Wilderness area. All wilderness maps contain contour lines, a topographic quad index and contact phone numbers, and the vast majority contain planning tips and descriptions of the terrain.
The Jedediah Smith Wilderness was designated because of the unique karst limestone features, including numerous caves and the outstanding scenic values. Long and narrow, the Wilderness lies on the west slope of the Teton Range near the Idaho-Wyoming state line and stretches from Yellowstone National Park south to Teton Pass.
The Winegar Hole Wilderness was designated specifically to provide high quality habitat for the grizzly bear. Part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, this Wilderness is located on the southern boundary of Yellowstone National Park near the Idaho-Wyoming state line. The area is managed as a trailless area to provide maximum security for the grizzly bear except for one short trail that provides access to Yellowstone National Park. A permit is required to camp overnight and dogs and firearms are not allowed in Yellowstone National Park.
